Heavy-duty chairs: 110 kg, 150 kg and what the standard says

"Heavy-duty chair" is not a protected term — anyone may use it. Only one thing can be verified: which standard the chair was tested to, and what user weight follows from that.

110 kg or 150 kg — the figure comes from the standard

Testing to the European standard EN 1335 assumes people up to 110 kg. That is the basis for practically every ordinary office chair. If a chair is additionally tested to the British standard BS 5459-2, the permissible user weight is 150 kg — and that test covers more than eight hours of daily use at the same time.

Tested toPermissible user weightDaily use
EN 1335110 kg8 hours
BS 5459-2150 kgmore than 8 hours

The two go together: the same reinforced construction that makes a chair fit for shift work also carries more weight. That is why heavy-duty chairs and 24-hour chairs are, in practice, the same models.

Why the figure matters

The permissible user weight is not a recommendation but a condition. If it is exceeded, the basis for warranty and guarantee claims falls away — regardless of whether the chair shows any outward damage. At HÅG the rule is: chairs to BS 5459-2 up to 150 kg, all others up to 110 kg.

If you are unsure whether a particular model carries the higher rating, ask us before you order. The answer costs nothing and takes two minutes.

What a higher user weight does not replace

A chair rated to 150 kg is built more sturdily — that does not automatically make it more comfortable for larger people. Seat width, seat depth and the adjustment ranges of the backrest are what decide whether somebody sits well. The two should match, and that is exactly what makes trying a chair out worthwhile: the models are ready in our showroom in Geyer.
